If you are applying by yourself then you are making a sole application.

If both you and your spouse are applying together then you are making a joint application.

A joint application removes the need to serve documents on your spouse. If there is a child of the marriage currently under 18 and you are making a joint application then neither you nor your spouse are required to attend the hearing, however, if you are making a sole application then you will be required to attend the hearing.
